The Point has come up with an idea to save us from the bad weather in Chicago.
“The answer is simple: we must build a dome around Chicago.”
Yep that’s right build a GIANT retractable dome. I have always said Chicago would be the best place in the world if it were not for the winter. It would be great 70 degree weather year round, we could open it up around Christmas, but only if snow is in the forecast keeping the white Christmas tradition.
I think it’s a way to get people talking about the site (well I fell for it). The site is designed to get groups of people to commit to an idea before the idea is put into action. So they are looking for people to pledge money, they think it will cost $10 billion dollars. Would you want a dome and how much is it worth to you?
The site has a bunch of Q /A and this is the best one:
“How do I get in and out of the dome? The same way you get in and out of Chicago now. There will be holes all over the place, including airplane shaped holes in the sky.”
The domed city idea has been around for a while and not just is sci-fi. In 1965 the St. Louis Post Dispatch discussed the idea for Manhattan and reportedly there is a Moscow suburb working build one today.

Such a dome may require intense energy hungry (expensive) ventilation if we would wish to avoid a catastrophe such as the Great Smog of Dec5 1952 in London. Dec7 visibility dropped to one foot. Dec9 death rate went from under 300/day to 900/day.

Anyways, winter won’t be around for much longer. Expect record heat waves. According to NASA the top 5 warmest years since 1890’s are:
2005,1998,2002,2003,2004
A greenhouse Chicago sounds like a deathtrap. Chicago is already a deathtrap. The only reason 3 million people can survive in Chicago is because food is shipped in from across the world. What happens when the fuel runs out? Think about it, don’t drink about it.
